Arkasa is the largest village on the southeastern part of Karpathos. The village was build on the ruins of Arkesia, an ancient city which flourished thousands of years ago. One of the most important sites in Arkasa is the byzantine temple called Agia Sophia dating from the fifth century. It has been well preserved with mosaic flooring, showing the fine art of the predecessors. The other important historical site is located on the Paleokastro hill, next to Agios Nicholaos Beach.
The ruins of ancient Arkesia are situated here, one of the leading cities in the ancient times. The hiking trail up to the ruins of Arkesia start from Agia Sophia, which is just mins away and is the mountain that protrudes out in to the ocean that we overlook.
Arkasa is the closest village to the airport, which is approximately a 15 minute car ride. The capital, main port of the island is called Pigadia which also is very close, merely 20 minutes away. Finiki is another lovely coastal settlement 2 km away. It is mostly known for being the local port for Arkasa with fish taverns serving local delicacies and the freshest of seafood. The wooden boats at the picturesque port adorn the entire settlement and right next to it is a beautiful sandy beach, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
